3 Best Stomach Fat Loss Exercises

by Ed Scow (aka The Fit Dad) - Certified Fitness Professional and Fat Loss Expert for Busy Moms and Dads

When it comes to fat loss exercises, especially stomach fat loss exercises, there tends to be a lot of confusion.

There are a lot of so-called experts out there who fill you with all the hope in the world that their crappy little infomercial crunching piece of plastic is going to help you lose stomach fat.  Well, it's not.  It'll just drain your wallet and make you more frustrated.

To lose stomach fat, you need to focus on your diet and do full body fat loss exercises similar to the 3 I have outlined below.

#1: Push-up – The push-up doesn’t usually get looked at as a great stomach fat loss exercise, but it is.

It’s one of the only exercises that I can think of that not only works virtually every muscle in your entire upper body, but is also a great core exercise – which makes it a great fat loss exercise in my book.

Remember, the key to any great fat loss exercise is that it must move a lot of muscle and the push-up does just that.

It works the chest, shoulders, triceps (back of your arms), plus your core gets involved due to the stability that’s needed – doesn’t the push-up kind of look like a "moving plank"?

There are so many variations that it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner who can’t do a single "regular" push-up, or a more advanced individual who can do 100. You should always include some sort of push-up variation as a fat loss exercise in your fat loss program.

#2: Squat – The squat is another big muscle mover making it just as good, if not better than, the push-up when it comes to fat loss exercises.

The squat works every single muscle in your lower body, plus your core gets involved because it has to keep you upright and stable…which is what your core’s job is.

As I said earlier, a good fat loss exercise has to move a lot of muscle and the squat does just that.

Just make sure your form is right before adding weight. Your heels should stay on the floor and your back should remain neutral with your chest held out and stomach tight.

Perform this fat loss exercise wrong and it could mean trouble.

#3: Mountain Climber – The mountain climber is starting to gain in popularity as a fat loss exercise, but it’s still relatively unknown.

When someone tells me they love crunches as an abs exercise, I tell them to do mountain climbers instead.

Not only do they work your abs, they are also a great ‘metabolic’ exercise, which means they’ll burn more stomach fat – which is what everybody looks for in a fat loss exercise.

Mountain climbers kind of look like you’re running along the floor, except your hands don’t move. You’re in the top push-up position, and you just begin to alternate bringing one knee to your chest for a set period of time – say 30 seconds.

Do that a few times and you’ll agree that it’s a great fat loss exercise.

What do all 3 of those stomach fat loss exercises have in common? First of all, they’re all full body exercises so they work a lot of muscle at one time, and that is the true key to consider any exercise a fat loss exercise.

Isolation movements like bicep curls, triceps kickbacks, leg extensions or crunches may look good on paper and help develop certain areas of your body, but when it comes to fat loss and getting as much fat off your body in the smallest amount of time possible, they really don’t do much of anything.

They simply don’t work enough muscle at one time, and if you want to lose fat you have to move a lot of muscle because that’s where all the fat burning kicks in. Muscle burns fat and the more you move, the more fat you burn.

You can even take these exercises one step further and create an entire fat loss workout using just these 3 fat loss exercises.

After you do a quick warm-up, just do these 3 exercises in a circuit format, meaning you do one after the other without stopping. Do as many total sets as possible in 10 minutes. Do sets of 10 for push-ups, 15 for squats (if doing bodyweight), and do the mountain climbers for 30 seconds.
