One of the big parts of my job is answering
email questions. I love interacting with clients and email
is the quickest and easiest way to do it.
Lately, I've been getting a lot of questions
from frustrated, confused and angry people who are wondering
why their weight loss has stalled. They all ask, "Why can't I lose weight?"
The tough part for me is in trying to figure
out what the underlying problem is so I can help them get
back on track and get rid of their unwanted
weight.
I do notice one topic that keeps coming up time
and again in helping frustrated people lose weight and
that's a routine or setting up rituals.
We all have habits - both good and bad
habits.
Its a habit to brush our teeth twice a day, and
that's a good habit.
Its a habit to buckle your seat belt whenever
you get in a car and that's also a good habit.
However, we have plenty of bad habits as well
and you're probably committing some of them in your quest to
lose weight and those bad habits are leading you to ask
yourself (and me) "Why cant I lose weight?"
To overcome these bad habits, you need to set
up some sort of routine that you stick to most days of the
week.
That routine could involve waking up 10 minutes earlier to make sure you get
your workout in every day. Yes, it will be difficult in the
beginning (most habits are), but after a week or two it will
become a routine and you'll start to feel guilty if you hit
the snooze bar too many times.
When I have busy training days, Ill do this
because I'm completely wiped by the end of the day and don't
want to workout. It really helped me when I had my own
struggles with wondering why I couldn't lose weight and it
will help you too.
You could also make it a routine to have the
same breakfast and snacks every day. That way you don't have
to worry about what to eat. If you allow yourself to wonder
what you're going to eat, you're going to think with your
stomach and not your brain which will lead to even more
frustrations and more questions of Why cant I lose
weight?
I do this and it helps tremendously. I have the
same smoothie for breakfast every day. I get it prepped the
night before, so I can come into the kitchen, blend it up
and take it with me on my drive to the training studio.
Another routine you could do is telling
yourself you're not going to eat any snacks after your last
meal of the day.
Not because there's something magical about not
eating past a certain time, rather its what you normally eat
when you have a late night snack. Most people don't have
healthy snacks, and instead turn to comfort foods which are
calorie-heavy junk foods or drinks.
I convinced a client to do
this recently and it made all the difference with her weight
loss plateau. She cut out her nightly snack, and within two
weeks she was back on course and losing weight.
Setting up a weight loss
routine and giving yourself some new, healthy and good
habits will get you back on the weight loss track and you
wont have to ask yourself, or me, why you cant lose
weight.
What routines can you set up today?
